Title:  Lab Supervisor - 2nd Shift

Essilor of America, Inc. (Essilor), is the leading manufacturer and wholesaler of prescription lenses in the United States. We currently have a 2nd/3rd Shift Lab Supervisor career opportunity at our Greensboro, NC location.



This position will oversee and direct the activities of the Finishing & Shipping Departments within Southern Optical.  The supervisor will support a group of 20+ employees to ensure production goals are met, and standard procedures are being documented and followed. The supervisor will be responsible for all employees in their responsible departments.  




Responsibilities of the job include: planning and organizing production schedules; assessing necessary project and resource requirements to then implement continuous improvements in quality, service level, efficiency, positive employee engagement & morale while balancing cost savings when factoring labor, consumables and maintenance savings. 


  • Responsible for the daily production through Finishing & QA departments to maximize equipment throughput.

  • Continuous improvement mindset to always find the most efficient quality improvement methods on delivering our valuable customers an accurate pair of glasses in the shortest amount of time.

  • Engage with employees and listen to their ideas and keep them involved with daily team meetings.

  • Leverage Workstream Teams for continuous improvements in the 4 key areas of Employee Engagement, Quality Right First time (QRFT), Flow & Balance (cycle time, WIP, Theory & Constraints) and Clean, Standardize, Audit & Improve (CSAI).

  • Increase yield while decreasing reworks and customer returns to give the customer a quality job the first time right while targeting on continuously decreasing the amount of stalled jobs.

  • Uncovering flaws in our process & acting on every opportunity in finding ways to continually work smarter to improve yield and quality.  

  • Forecast incoming to help balance the employees work schedules and hours appropriately to increase jobs per person per hour while eliminating overtime.

  • Participate in the hiring, orientation and training of new personnel in their respective departments and set the standard with clear expectations while holding employees accountable.

  • Evaluate performance of employees, and discipline employees according to company policy as needed.  Train employees on new processes or to improve skills as needed based on root cause analysis of escaping and non-escaping defects (upstream and downstream).

  • Update skills matrix to help identify which employees are best suited for each area to maximize their skills and identify cross training needs by partnering with the Essilor Operations Excellence Training Team. 

  • Uphold SOPS's for each workstation and processes in all areas of responsibility to help ensure a best practice standard that all employees are to consistently follow on each shift.  

  • Maintain performance records on employees, routinely communicate performance to employees and coach employees on methods and techniques for improving performance to include reviewing time, production numbers, team work & quality records.

  • Maintain department budget goals by managing labor, consumables, defects and maintenance costs.

  • Ensure that all safety standards are maintained in the work areas.

  • Identifying, selecting & developing strong leads to help carry out the Essilor vision of management and adhere to our company values.

  • Works in conjunction with the entire team to help all departments succeed for the greater good of our valuable customers with a strong teamwork mindset.



  • Two year degree or equivalent in a related field with proven on the job experience working in a production environment.

  • Previous optical experience in a lab production environment preferred.

  • Lean Six Sigma experience preferred.

  • Previous experience leading a group of 10 or more employees. 

  • Strong planning, communicating and organizing skills a must.

  • Analytic mindset combined with a passion to solve and improve problem areas.

  • Extensive experience in developing & executing procedures.

  • Strong leadership in developing and training the individual as well as the team.

  • Strong human interactions to bring out the best in employees while making them feel appreciated.

  • Lead by example with a strong teamwork mentality while fostering respect, pride, dependability and a strong work ethic atmosphere.

  • Appreciate the art of holding people accountable respectfully and fairly & keeping morale positive with an aim to improve our labs quality, service level, productivity while decreasing overall costs.

  • Demonstrated competence in supervisory skills: motivating employees to meet performance goals, strong communication skills, comfortable with constantly coaching and training individuals and teams with a passionate continuous improvement mindset at the forefront.

  • Very strong knowledge of computers to analyze data and keying in on extracting the most useful information to help gauge where we stand in overall quality and service levels & most importantly creating action plans on the areas we need to improve based on customers’ & management’s expectations.

  • Very dependable to Management, Sales Teams and the CS Team to help meet the demands of our valuable customers in providing jobs accurately & timely while ensuring all responsible departments are meeting their hourly throughput.

  • Must be willing to work flexible hours to meet production goals.
