Title:  Lab Supervisor 2nd Shift

Essilor of America, Inc. (Essilor), is the leading manufacturer and wholesaler of prescription lenses in the United States. We currently have a Lab Supervisor 2nd Shift career opportunity at our Long Island City, NY location.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

 

  • This role supports Essilor’s Mission Improving Lives by Improving Sight by overseeing production operations and ensuring that production is an efficient process by monitoring employees and organizing workflows.  This includes, but not limited to communicating job expectations, planning, monitoring and appraising job results as well as coaching, counseling and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating and enforcing systems, policies and procedures. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Set daily/weekly/monthly objectives and communicate them to employees.
  • Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees; developing personal growth opportunities. 
  • Manager projects to improve processes throughout the department for the purpose of improving production and quality levels.  Identify issues in efficiency, suggest and execute improvements.
  • Responsible for all aspects of Performance Management to include disciplining employees for violations to any company and or department policy.
  • Organize workflow by assigning responsibilities and preparing work and vacation schedules.
  • Check production output according to specifications to ensure that set goals will be met.  If not, necessary adjustments will need to be made.
  • Submit reports on performance and progress.
  • Control labor and material cost.
  • Build a cohesive team, lead by example and manage directly through multiple supervisors and/or leads.
  • Ensure the safe use of equipment and schedule regular maintenance.
  • Work flexible hours including weekends as needed, in order to meet la and department objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

Quality Right the First Time

  • Tracking and Communication of Escaping and Non-Escaping Defects.
  • Root Cause analysis of defect causes.
  • Execute improvement actions to reduce defects.

 

Engagement

  • Provide employees with clear performance objectives tied to lab performance for quality, productivity, service and growth.
  • Communicate safety, production, quality, cost and schedule on a weekly basis (weekly meeting with Supervisors).Communicate openly and consistently with Production Manager regarding status of department.
  • Communicate and be able to use progressive discipline and coaching to any employees not conforming to performance, job requirements, department rules and behavior related issues.
  • Provide Group Leaders with individual performance scores on a weekly basis.
  • Work closely with group leads to ensure proper cross-training is provided to employees on all processes and equipment.
  • Follow up and communicate performance levels routinely to each Group Leaders.  Coach Group Leaders on methods and techniques for improving performance.
  • Provide regular and timely recognition to employees for above and beyond behaviors that align with Essilor’s Mission and Values.

Clean, Standardize, Audit and Approve

  • Perform regular audits to ensure that correct procedures are being followed and machines are properly calibrated. Immediately document and post any changes to SOP’s.
  • Analyze problems that arise, gather needed data, determine actions that will solve problems, decrease costs and/or improve yields. Recommend changes and take initiatives by implementing solutions on the floor.
  • Lead lean initiatives/projects throughout the lab to improve process flow, through put, and overall lab performance.
  • Maintain department unit costs by managing with anticipation consumables, labor, equipment, and maintenance expenses.
  • Ensure proper hiring process, involving Supervisors in the process: interviews, orientations, Apex, 45/90 days reviews, and maintain current and accurate performance and attendance records.
  • Create, update and maintain visual aids at each station.
  • Create and update SOPs for each process

 

Flow and Balance

  • Tracking hour by hour production standards
  • Controlling WIP to standards
  • Controlling launch of work to further departments
  • Bottleneck identification and focus to maximize production around it

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business management or related field with proven on the job management experience working in a production environment preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years optical lab experience is preferred, especially experience with digital surfacing technology.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years management experience in a fast paced production environment with proven track record of success.
  • Demonstrated competence in supervisor skills: motivating employees to meet performance goals, strong communication skills, comfortable with coaching and training individuals and teams.
  • Previous experience implementing Lean and Six Sigma process improvements preferred.
  • Computer skills including proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Previous experience working with statistical analysis tools to gather and report data preferred.
